AFRICA WEEK 2008

Hey everybody.

So ASU's 2nd Annual Africa Week (Nov. 9-14) is quickly approaching.

So that you all can be up to date (and map out your schedule for the week), below is our listing of events. We hope to see you soon!

This will be ASU’s 2nd Annual Africa Week. Africa Week was established at University of Miami during the Fall Semester of 2007 to celebrate the heritage and culture of Africa Campus-wide for an entire week.


o ASU Community Service – Wild N’ Crazy Kids Go Global!
ASU will begin Africa Week 2008 by serving the community. Co-sponsored with Yellow Rose Society and a number of other student organizations, approximately 100 community youth will gather at UM with students in obstacle course activities and culture centered games.

o “Afrocentria” Africa Week Opening Ceremonies
“Afrocentria” is a celebration of African culture through dance, live music, poetry, art, and food.
Come enjoy a celebration of Africa as well as the opening ceremonies to Africa Week,
Sunday, November 9th, 7:00PM (UC Rock)


o African Cause Forum and Display
Witness a display of the numerous issues faced by African countries and learn ways that you can help.
Monday, November 10th, 6:00PM (UC Lower Lounge)


o Faculty Fellow w/ Africana and Religious Studies
Enjoy a dinner and discussion with faculty of the Africana and Religious Studies Department on the role and impact of religion in Africa.
Tuesday, November 11th, 6:00 PM (Mahoney Apt.)


o Spoken Word at the Rat co-sponsored by ASU
This month’s Spoken Word event will feature Bridget Gray, Winner of Best Narrative Short at Elevate Film Festival, a student feature, and the stage will be open for Open Mic. Brought to you by RAB and ASU.
Wednesday, November 12th, 7:00PM (The Rathskeller)


o “The Rock of Africa"
Socialize and enjoy the sights and sounds of Africa. Join ASU on the Rock to represent and appreciate the diversity and heritage Africa has contributed to the world over the ages while celebrating the founding of our organization with cake!
Thursday, November 13th, 11:00AM – 2:00PM (UC Rock)


o African Dance Lessons
Dance is an integral part of African culture. Join African Students Union to learn fundamental African dance moves and their significance from a professional.
Thursday, November 13th, 7:00PM (UC Ballroom A)


o ASU “Wrap” Party

Join ASU at the Rat for a “Wrap” Party to close out the week. Guests will be able to enjoy a mixture of African and American music and dress in various pieces of African attire. Brought to you by RAB and ASU.
